Anchoring

The first number on the table bends every number that follows it.

The research, plainly

Tversky and Kahneman showed that even obviously arbitrary numbers — a spun wheel of fortune — dragged people's subsequent estimates toward them. The first figure becomes the reference point, and adjustment away from it is reliably insufficient.

The receipt: Tversky & Kahneman, 1974

What it means for events

Sequence your numbers deliberately. The first price, the first tier, the first benchmark shown sets the scale everything after is judged against — whether you chose it strategically or let it happen by accident.

Where to run it

Sponsorship & pricing

Present the flagship tier first. It anchors the scale; the middle tier then reads as reasonable instead of expensive.

ROI conversations

Open with the cost of the status quo — the pipeline not built, the deals lost — before the event budget appears against it.

Auctions & fundraising

The opening ask calibrates the room. Start where you want the average to live, not at the floor.

Seen in the wild

Watch any premium product launch: the top-spec price is revealed first, making everything beneath it feel accessible. That reveal order is anchoring run as theater.
