Anticipation

Looking forward to a thing is part of the pleasure of the thing.

The research, plainly

Loewenstein's work on anticipated utility showed people derive real, present enjoyment from savoring future experiences — sometimes preferring to delay a pleasure just to enjoy the waiting. Vacation studies find much of a trip's happiness arrives before departure.

The receipt: Loewenstein, 1987

What it means for events

The weeks before your event are event. Every reveal, countdown, and artifact that lands in advance is experience delivered early — free value that also compounds attendance, because people protect calendar space for things they're already enjoying.

Where to run it

Pre-event campaign

Serialize it: speaker drops, venue glimpses, one mystery. The countdown is content.

Executive programs

The beautifully produced physical invitation that arrives three weeks early starts the experience on the desk.

Incentive travel

The entire genre runs on anticipation — the announcement moment at SKO is often worth more than the trip's second day.

Seen in the wild

Concert on-sale culture — countdowns, presale codes, the calendar alarm — monetizes anticipation openly, and vacation research keeps confirming the punchline: the looking-forward is measurable happiness. Ship some of your event early.
