Awe

Moments that break your sense of scale make people feel smaller, more connected, and more generous.

The research, plainly

Keltner and Haidt defined awe as the emotion of vastness — encountering something so large or profound the mind has to stretch to take it in. Paul Piff's experiments found even a minute of awe (standing in a towering eucalyptus grove) measurably increased helping and generosity: awe shrinks the self and enlarges the group.

What it means for events

Awe is the one emotion experiential can manufacture that no other channel can. Scale, reveal, ceiling, sound — a genuinely vast moment doesn't just impress people; it makes them more open, more connected, and more willing to be part of something.

Where to run it

Product launch

One scale-breaking reveal beats twenty feature slides. Budget for the gasp.

Brand activation

Build the thing people photograph from below. Vastness is shareability.

Opening general session

Open with the moment that resets everyone's sense of what kind of event this is. Awe first, agenda second.

Seen in the wild

Red Bull Stratos — a man jumping from the edge of space, live — remains the purest awe play in brand history. At venue scale, Sphere in Las Vegas is awe as architecture: the room itself is the reveal.
