Commitment & Consistency

Once someone says it out loud — in writing, in public, by choice — they work hard to stay true to it.

The research, plainly

Cialdini's synthesis of decades of research: humans have a deep drive to be consistent with what they've already said and done. Commitments that are written, public, and voluntary reshape identity — and future behavior follows identity.

What it means for events

Applause is not commitment. A named, written, witnessed intention is. The event that ends with signatures beats the event that ends with sentiment — because consistency pressure keeps working for weeks after the lights go down.

Where to run it

Conference close

Commitment cards, signed and shared with a partner: what, by when, witnessed by whom. The exit ritual IS the ROI mechanism.

SKO & internal

Reps announce their number and their first play to their pod — chosen out loud beats assigned in email.

Cause & sustainability events

The pledge wall works because it's public and physical: a signature you can visit is a promise that ages well.

Seen in the wild

Pledge walls persist at major climate and industry gatherings for a simple reason: organizers keep finding that visible, voluntary, written commitments outlive the event that collected them.
