Concreteness

Concrete words stick. Abstract words evaporate.

The research, plainly

Paivio's dual-coding research found concrete, imageable words dramatically better remembered than abstractions — 'fridge' outlives 'refrigeration solutions' because the mind stores the picture alongside the word. Abstraction has no second copy.

The receipt: Paivio, 1971

What it means for events

Speak in things, not categories. 'A fridge that texts you when the milk is low' beats 'IoT-enabled consumer solutions' in every memory test that will ever matter — and your strategy deck is competing in exactly that test.

Where to run it

Message discipline

Every abstract claim gets a concrete twin: the number becomes a person, the capability becomes a Tuesday scenario.

Demo design

Show the specific thing happening to a specific user — the concrete instance is what gets retold.

Executive content

Vision statements need one vivid concrete anchor each, or they join the compost of forgotten aspirations.

Seen in the wild

Kennedy didn't promise 'aerospace leadership' — he promised a man on the moon by the decade's end, the most cited concrete goal in history — and Made to Stick built its bestselling case on the same Paivio physics: the specific survives.
