The research, plainly
Robert Zajonc's social facilitation work showed that the presence of others amplifies our dominant responses — practiced behavior gets stronger in a crowd, hesitant behavior gets weaker. Crowds are amplifiers: they turn up whatever is already happening, including flatness.

What it means for events
Density is contagion infrastructure. Energy, laughter, applause — all spread person-to-person, and spread requires proximity. A room at half capacity doesn't read as 'intimate'; it reads as 'something went wrong,' and every attendee quietly recalibrates downward.
Where to run it
Product launch
Book the room one size smaller than the forecast. Standing-room-only is a story people tell; empty seats are a story too.
Conference session
Close the back sections until the front fills. A 200-person session in a 200-person room outperforms the same session in a 500-person hall.
Festival & activation
Design deliberate pinch points — the packed moment photographs and feels like demand.
