Darkness & Openness

People say braver things in dimmer rooms.

The research, plainly

Gergen and colleagues put strangers together in pitch-dark versus lit rooms. In the dark, people moved closer, disclosed more, and touched conversation topics they'd avoid in the light. Reduced visibility reads as reduced exposure — and openness follows.

The receipt: Gergen et al., 1973

What it means for events

The confessional quality of dim rooms is a design tool. When the agenda needs honesty — the hard Q&A, the real talk about what's failing, the personal story — lower the lights and watch the guard drop.

Where to run it

Fireside & AMA

Literal or figurative firelight: the dim, warm setting is why the format produces candor its bright-room twin never does.

Story moments

Darkness plus a single voice is the oldest attention technology humans have. Use it for the story that matters.

Feedback sessions

Anonymous input tools plus low light — double anonymity for the truths people won't say under fluorescents.

Seen in the wild

The global 'Dining in the Dark' phenomenon and the endurance of the campfire-circle format at offsites both trade on the same effect: take away the watching, and people bring out what they were holding.
