Decision Timing

Decisions get worse as the day wears on. Even judges get harsher before lunch.

The research, plainly

Danziger's team analyzed over a thousand parole rulings and found favorable decisions starting near 65% early in the day, collapsing toward zero before food breaks, then rebounding after. Mental fatigue and glucose reshaped justice itself, hour by hour.

What it means for events

Your agenda is scheduling people's judgment quality, not just their time. The vote, the pilot decision, the commitment moment — put them where the brains are: morning, or freshly after real food and rest. Never at 4:30 on day two.

Where to run it

Agenda architecture

Decision moments in the morning; inspiration and story after lunch; nothing consequential in the final fatigued hour.

Executive sessions

The budget conversation at 9 AM is a different conversation than the same one at 4 PM. Choose accordingly.

Breaks as strategy

Breaks aren't lost time — they're judgment maintenance. Feed the room before you ask the room.

Seen in the wild

The hungry-judges study became one of behavioral science's most cited findings precisely because the stakes were so visible: the same case, the same law, different hours — different lives. Your pipeline decisions ride the same curve.
