Emotional Contagion

Feelings spread through a room like weather.

The research, plainly

Hatfield, Cacioppo, and Rapson documented the mechanics: humans automatically mimic expressions, postures, and vocal tones — and through that mimicry, actually catch each other's emotions. Feeling is transmissible, fast, and mostly unconscious.

The receipt: Hatfield, Cacioppo & Rapson, 1993

What it means for events

Your room's emotional state is being set by its most expressive people — so choose them. Seed the front rows with genuine enthusiasm, brief your hosts as emotional thermostats, and never let the first faces attendees see be the tired ones.

Where to run it

Room seeding

Your most engaged customers and energized staff up front, deliberately — the room catches what the front broadcasts.

Host & MC casting

The MC's energy is the event's set point. Cast for contagion, not just competence.

Virtual events

Contagion needs faces: cameras on for reactions, a visible live audience for speakers, chat as the applause channel.

Seen in the wild

Television's laugh track and the warm-up comedian exist because broadcasters proved contagion's value decades ago: audiences laugh more when laughter is present — and every great event floor manager runs the same physics by feel.
