The research, plainly
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi interviewed thousands — surgeons, climbers, artists — and found the same optimal state: total absorption when challenge and skill balance, with clear goals and immediate feedback. Too easy breeds boredom; too hard breeds anxiety; the channel between them is flow.

What it means for events
Passive audiences can't flow — flow requires doing. Design sessions where attendees work on hard-but-doable problems with visible progress, and the event stops being watched and starts being inhabited.
Where to run it
Workshops
Real problems, real constraints, a clock, and visible output. The struggle is the engagement.
Gamified journeys
Challenges that escalate with the attendee — flat difficulty bores the strong and breaks the new.
