The Generation Effect

People remember what they produce far better than what they receive.

The research, plainly

Slamecka and Graf showed that simply generating a word — completing 'rapid: f___' versus reading 'fast' — dramatically improved memory for it. Production, even trivial production, encodes deeper than reception. The finding has replicated for decades.

What it means for events

The audience that writes, says, builds, and teaches remembers. The audience that watches, forgets. Every session should force generation: their words, their plan, their version — because the content they produce is the only content that survives the parking lot.

Where to run it

Session design

Stop at intervals and make them produce: write the takeaway, tell the neighbor, solve the next step before you reveal it.

Workshops

The room builds the framework's application to their business — generated once, owned forever.

Enablement

Teach-back beats certification video: the rep who explains the pitch remembers the pitch.

Seen in the wild

Medical education's shift to teach-back methods and the flipped-classroom movement are the generation effect institutionalized: the field that most needs retention stopped lecturing and started making learners produce.
