Goal Gradient

The closer people get to done, the harder they push.

The research, plainly

Clark Hull watched rats run faster as they neared food; Kivetz's café studies found humans buying coffee faster as loyalty cards filled. Effort accelerates with proximity to the goal — the finish line pulls.

The receipt: Hull, 1932; Kivetz et al., 2006

What it means for events

Progress you can see is fuel. 'Station 3 of 4' beats 'visit our stations'; the visible checklist beats the vague journey. Show attendees exactly how close they are to done, and the last steps take care of themselves.

Where to run it

Event journeys

Progress bars on everything: sessions attended, passport stamps, certification steps. Proximity is the motivator.

Fundraising & pledges

The thermometer at 85% raises the last 15% faster than the first — display accordingly, sequence reveals accordingly.

Session mechanics

'Two questions left' re-energizes a flagging workshop. Countdown structure borrows the gradient.

Seen in the wild

Kivetz's café ran the tidy natural experiment — purchase pace accelerating measurably toward the free coffee — and every airline status counter and fitness ring since has monetized the same pull of the almost-finished.
