Habit Loops

Behavior that repeats has a cue. No cue, no repeat.

The research, plainly

Wood and Neal's research on habit mechanics: repeated behavior gets delegated from intention to context — a cue (time, place, preceding event) triggers the routine automatically. Lasting behavior change means winning the cue, not just the motivation.

What it means for events

The event can install motivation, but only a cue can sustain behavior. Attach every new practice to something that already recurs in the attendee's week — the Monday standup, the pipeline review, the calendar block — or watch the inspiration expire with the badge.

Where to run it

Enablement design

'Every Monday standup opens with the new qualifying question' — the existing meeting is the host for the new habit.

Follow-up programs

Prompt at the cue moment, not at random: the Tuesday 8:55 nudge before the 9:00 where the behavior lives.

Customer success

Onboard the product into an existing ritual rather than asking for a new one — borrowed cues beat built ones.

Seen in the wild

Duhigg's telling of the Febreze story — sales unlocked by attaching the spray to the existing end-of-cleaning ritual — became the canonical case: the product didn't change; its cue did, and the habit followed.
