The research, plainly
Tajfel's minimal-group experiments sorted strangers by trivia as arbitrary as coin flips and painting preferences — and found immediate favoritism toward their meaningless group. Sherif's Robbers Cave camp turned assigned boys' teams into instant tribes. Belonging switches on at the label.

What it means for events
Group identity is nearly free to manufacture and remarkably productive: cohort colors, table teams, named tracks. Minutes-old tribes participate more, compete harder, and bond faster — the label does work the icebreaker never could.
Where to run it
Cohort design
Assign colors and names on arrival. By lunch, 'Team Teal' has opinions, jokes, and loyalty.
Competition mechanics
Team-based games multiply engagement over individual ones — people show up for tribes they didn't choose.
Multi-event programs
Persistent cohorts across a program turn a series of meetings into a class year — with a class year's retention.
