The Intention–Action Gap

Meaning to do it and doing it are different worlds.

The research, plainly

Sheeran's meta-analysis quantified the embarrassment: intentions explain only a modest fraction of behavior — even sincere, strong intentions frequently die between the deciding and the doing. The gap isn't a character flaw; it's the default.

What it means for events

Your event's applause is intention, and intention is not a result. Every design choice after the inspiring moment — the plan, the prompt, the booked next step, the removed friction — is a bridge across the gap, and events without bridges deliver warm feelings to the void.

Where to run it

Design doctrine

Treat every 'they loved it' as unconverted inventory. The event isn't done until the bridge is built.

Closing mechanics

Convert standing ovations into calendar entries before the room empties — enthusiasm has a half-life of hours.

Measurement

Measure Day-30 action, never exit-survey intention. Intention flatters; behavior reports.

Seen in the wild

The gym-membership economy is the gap monetized — January's sincere intentions funding equipment nobody visits by March — and the same physics explains why event NPS and event ROI so often tell different stories.
