Moral Licensing

One good deed quietly buys permission for a lapse.

The research, plainly

Mazar and Zhong found shoppers who bought green products subsequently cheated and shared less than conventional shoppers — the virtuous act banked moral credit that licensed the lapse. Good deeds can fund bad ones.

The receipt: Khan & Dhar, 2006

What it means for events

Beware the event as the good deed. 'We attended the summit' can become the accomplishment that licenses inaction — the team feels they've done the strategy thing, so doing the strategy waits. Frame attendance as the start of the work, never the evidence of it.

Where to run it

Framing discipline

Close on 'the work starts Monday,' explicitly. Never let the certificate feel like the finish line.

Internal events

The offsite that celebrates commitment must schedule the first action before it ends — or the celebration becomes the substitute.

Cause events

Design the pledge to trigger the behavior, not replace it: signature plus calendared first step, always paired.

Seen in the wild

Mazar and Zhong's green-shopping study named a pattern every diet knows — the salad that licenses the dessert — and every strategy offsite risks reproducing: the meeting about the thing, mistaken for the thing.
