Music & Register

Dead air tells the room something is wrong.

The research, plainly

Decades of music-and-emotion research show tempo, mode, and volume steering arousal and mood — and silence, in a produced context, reading as uncertainty. Cramer's own analysis of meeting music maps the same effect onto corporate rooms: the score is emotional stage direction.

What it means for events

Score the whole event, not just the walk-in. Transitions, resets, builds toward the ask — each needs a register. And the gaps matter most: unproduced silence between segments is an ambiguity tax the audience pays in confidence.

Where to run it

Walk-in & walk-out

The first and last sounds are the emotional bookends — choose them like you choose the keynote.

Transitions

A music bed under every changeover. The room should never wonder if something broke.

The ask

Drop the music before the commitment moment — engineered silence, deployed once, is the loudest sound in the room.

Seen in the wild

Baseball's walk-up music and film scoring both prove the principle daily: the same moment with different music is a different moment. Sports arenas never allow dead air for a reason.
