Pain of Paying

Every separate charge stings. Bundles feel painless.

The research, plainly

Prelec and Loewenstein modeled the psychology of transactions: each payment moment triggers a distinct sting, and decoupling payment from consumption — prepaid, bundled, invisible — makes the same total spend feel dramatically lighter.

What it means for events

Nobody should do math at your event. Every itemized charge — the cash bar, the paid add-on, the surprise fee — is a fresh sting billed against the experience. All-inclusive isn't generosity; it's anesthesia, and it makes identical spend feel like hospitality.

Where to run it

Pricing architecture

One number, everything in. The itemized invoice and the all-in invoice cost the same and feel worlds apart.

On-site experience

Cash bars at hosted events are sting machines. Pre-fund the experience or don't offer it.

Sponsor packages

Bundle the add-ons in; the à-la-carte sheet makes partners feel nickeled at every line.

Seen in the wild

Casinos converted money into chips a century ago to dissolve the sting, and the all-inclusive resort model — plus every 'no math on vacation' cruise — industrialized Prelec's insight: decouple the paying from the enjoying and both improve.
