Peak-End Rule

People remember how the best moment felt and how the ending felt. The middle mostly vanishes.

The research, plainly

Kahneman and colleagues found that our remembering self doesn't average an experience — it samples the emotional peak and the ending. In the famous colonoscopy studies (Redelmeier & Kahneman), a longer procedure with a gentler ending was remembered as better than a shorter, harsher one. Duration barely registered; peak and end were everything.

The receipt: Kahneman & Fredrickson, 1993

What it means for events

Your event's memory is two data points. Fund one engineered peak — the moment people describe at dinner — and script the final ten minutes like they're the whole show. And never, ever end on logistics.

Where to run it

General session

Place your best moment deliberately, not wherever the agenda happened to put it. One peak, produced fully.

Conference close

The last thing that happens is the event, as far as memory is concerned. Commitment ritual, standing moment, named next step — not 'buses depart at 5.'

Awards & gala

The final award and the final song are the evening. Sequence backward from them.

Seen in the wild

Oprah's 'You get a car!' is a peak engineered for memory; Apple's 'one more thing' turned the ending itself into the most anticipated beat in tech. Both understood: memory is written at the peak and signed at the end.
