The research, plainly
Roediger and Karpicke had students either re-study a passage or take practice tests on it. A week later, the tested group remembered far more — retrieval practice built durable memory while re-reading built only familiarity. Testing isn't measurement; it's the training itself.

What it means for events
Follow-ups that re-send the deck build nothing. Follow-ups that ask — 'which of the three plays did you run?' — force retrieval, and retrieval is what installs the content. Quiz your audience, gently and often, forever.
Where to run it
Post-event sequence
Every touch asks instead of tells: one retrieval question per email. The answer matters less than the reaching for it.
In-event design
End sessions with recall, not recap: 'Write the one thing you'll quote tomorrow' beats a summary slide.
Certification programs
Frequent low-stakes quizzes across weeks beat one high-stakes exam — the testing IS the curriculum.
