Variable Rewards

Unpredictable rewards hook harder than guaranteed ones.

The research, plainly

B.F. Skinner's operant conditioning work found variable-ratio reinforcement — rewards on an unpredictable schedule — produced the most persistent behavior of any pattern, far outlasting predictable payoffs. Uncertainty of reward, strangely, strengthens pursuit.

What it means for events

Guaranteed swag is priced in before it's received; unpredictable delight compounds. Random upgrades, surprise guests, mystery unlocks — a lean layer of genuine unpredictability keeps attendees leaning forward all day, checking, hoping, engaged.

Where to run it

Engagement mechanics

Random seat upgrades and surprise perks announced through the day — the checking behavior is the engagement.

Agenda design

One unannounced moment per event, reliably unreliable: attendees learn that anything might happen, so attention stays on.

Gamification

Prize draws beat point-buys — the raffle's uncertainty out-motivates the catalog's certainty at equal cost.

Seen in the wild

Slot machines are variable reward engineered to its limit, and every 'pull to refresh' app borrowed the mechanism — the event version just needs to stay on the delight side of the same powerful curve.
