The research, plainly
David Maister's classic essay 'The Psychology of Waiting Lines' codified what service operators kept rediscovering: occupied time feels shorter than idle time, explained waits beat unexplained ones, and anxiety makes every minute longer. The clock matters less than the mind.

What it means for events
Every event has lines — registration, food, demos, coat check. Each one is either dead time that gets billed against your event, or programmable experience. The wait is part of the show whether you produce it or not.
Where to run it
Registration & arrival
Never let the first experience be an unexplained queue. Hosts working the line, screens with countdowns, check-in tasks to complete — occupied and explained.
Demo & booth
Post the wait time, give the line a job — a question to consider, a leaderboard to watch — and staff the last ten feet.
F&B moments
Split stations, visible progress, something worth looking at. Hungry idle crowds write the harshest reviews.
